Renewable energy project development growth across the U.S. and around the world has faced many significant challenges. Economic feasibility of renewable energy technologies has been one of those big challenges in making them competitive against conventional (fossil fuel based) energy generation technologies. With incentives, that economic hurdle has been overcome to an extent over the past couple of decades. However, such incentives, to level the playing field, have not been offered with consistence. That inconsistent support for renewable energy in the U.S., without long-term policy to provide this type of needed incentives, has hurt the renewable energy industry. On the other hand, an argument can be made that by relying on incentives for growing the renewable energy industry, in the long run, may actually prove to be detrimental as the industry might not apply itself aggressively to improve technologies and business practices to do away with incentives altogether.
As a result of the status quo, renewable energy development has not achieved its full potential nationally and globally. No matter what type of goals we set for ourselves, without innovative technologies that are effective, such goals will always remain lofty.
One such innovative technology, based on a patent pending energy optimization system, is being developed at Smart Energy Load Centers (SELC), Inc. The SELC technology overcomes three key challenges faced by renewable energy developers:
- No power grid in proximity or lack of grid capacity
- Prohibitive cost of stabilizing volatile renewable energy resource
- Inability to compete against conventional energy sources in the marketplace
The SELC technology overcomes the above challenges: 1) by bringing energy load to the generation sites, 2) by identifying cost savings elsewhere in the system that will offset energy storage costs, and 3) by essentially becoming an island utility itself.
Smart Energy Load Centers will initially be created by hosting 100’s of thousands of personal computers at the generation sites. These computers will utilize green, stable energy at a lower energy rate than the retail rate computer customers pay now for their energy.
